Hugo Vlad is the enigmatic leader of the phantom thief syndicate Mockingbird—a man who masquerades as a refined collector running an art gallery while secretly wielding a briefcase that transforms into an ice-beam-firing scythe called Final Notice, delivering "the very last warning letter to sinners." Born as the illegitimate son of the Ravenlock family with distinctive heterochromia, his mother tried to gouge out his "imperfect" eye before selling him to his noble relatives, where only his half-sister Serena showed him kindness until her murder—orchestrated by siblings who then blamed Hugo, though their father praised him as a "worthy heir." After fleeing, he was taken in by aging thief Jack alongside his partner Lycaon, learning the art of stealing without harming lives, but tragedy struck twice: when Hugo hesitated to kill his father during a heist, innocents died in a Hollow scheme, leading Lycaon to mistakenly believe Hugo responsible and abandon him, losing legs and an eye in the rescue effort. Now reformed Mockingbird with Vivian—a girl who reminds him of Serena—Hugo forces himself to eat sweets despite PTSD-induced nausea to manage his hypoglycemia, hides his pain from those closest to him, and proves that no "seed of evil" was ever planted: merely a survivor who climbed from the abyss to become whoever he wishes to be.
